wish the autobiographical solo comedy show “Now Hear
This.” Starring Kathy Buckley – America’s
first hearing-impaired comic – were sharper and stronger;
there are some slow stretches, and it builds to an intended
big moment that doesn’t fully pay off. But if the hoped-for
fireworks never quite materialize, this unique show about
a comic with Job-like endurance does offer its share of inspiration.
And – a real rarity in New York today – this is
one full-length comedy show that is clean throughout: no offensive
or mean-spirited content. You could take your whole family
to it. Buckley, who’s been a guest on shows like Jay
Leno’s and Howard Stern’s, tells how she was mistakenly
diagnosed as retarded, was run over by a Jeep she couldn’t
hear and beat cancer. She’s faced hard challenges with
wit and grace. Younger audience members will not only get
some gentle laughs from Buckley’s surprisingly buoyant
patter, they’ll learn something about life, and about
understanding folks who seem “different.” Lambs
